Droplet generation

See a dispersed stream form separate droplets inside a surrounding liquid.

Follow the structure

Each feature is also explained below. You can read the diagram without animation or JavaScript.

Separate streams

The central inlet represents a dispersed phase; the side channels represent a surrounding continuous phase. Labels distinguish the streams.

Junction

The illustrated streams meet at a narrowed junction. This is one simplified layout; droplet generators use different geometries.

Illustrated pinch-off

The sequence shows a schematic droplet separating. The animation does not calculate droplet size, frequency or stability.

Downstream droplets

Separated shapes represent droplets moving towards the outlet. Their spacing and size are illustrative.

Droplet microfluidics creates small compartments of one liquid within another immiscible liquid. In a flow-focusing arrangement, surrounding flow constrains a central stream near a narrow opening; the stream can break into droplets downstream.

The two flow rates, channel geometry and fluid properties affect droplet size and generation behaviour. Research on flow-focusing devices documents multiple operating regimes, so the same sketch does not imply one droplet size or a guaranteed uniform output.

ANFF Queensland lists syringe pumps, an inverted fluorescence microscope and a high-speed camera for microfluidic experiments. Wyss describes a more advanced encapsulation application that combines aqueous and oil phases to make microcapsules. That multi-stage process is distinct from the Explorer's simple single-emulsion illustration.

What this illustration leaves out

The sketch illustrates one single-emulsion geometry; T-junction, co-flow and other designs also exist. It does not specify surfactant, surface treatment, material compatibility or an operating regime. Droplet size, frequency, stability and cell occupancy are not predicted.
